Vintage 1944 hardcover copy of Private Breger in Britain by Lt. Dave Breger, published in London by The Pilot Press Ltd. Breger’s wartime cartoons chronicled American military life with the humor that made his “Private Breger” character famous among servicemen and readers during WWII. Breger himself served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in London during the war.
This particular copy has a wonderful piece of WWII-era provenance. The front endpaper is handwritten:
“To my friends the [Weisenbach/Wiesenbach]’s
Lt. Bob Rysh
London
8 July 1944”
The inscription was therefore made in London during WWII, less than five weeks after D-Day, giving the book an unusually evocative wartime association.
Also included is the pictured fold-out / large-format Dave Breger “GI Joe Engineers” cartoon sheet, featuring military engineering scenes including air fields, roads and bridges, mine sweeping, laying and camouflage. It bears Breger’s name and military attribution.
Hardcover retains its illustrated red dust jacket.
Condition:
Vintage wartime condition with visible age and use. Dust jacket shows edge wear, rubbing, small losses/tears and general handling wear, particularly along the spine and corners. Interior has expected toning and age spotting. Original handwritten 1944 military presentation inscription remains clearly visible. Fold-out cartoon has age toning and fold lines. Please review photographs closely as they form part of the condition description.
