He stands in quiet authority — white-glazed robes falling in clean sculptural folds, a scroll tucked under one arm, dark beard and official’s hat marking him as a man of learning and rank. The restraint of the white glaze against the painted black hair, beard, and hat gives this piece a strikingly graphic quality, almost like ink on paper.
This type of standing scholar or immortal figure was a staple of Chinese ceramic export through the mid-20th century, equally at home in a bonsai display, a curio cabinet, or a scholar’s desk arrangement. At 4.5” tall he has real presence for his size.
