Before there was Xavier Roberts and Coleco, there was Martha Nelson Thomas — the artist whose hand-sculpted “doll babies,” first made in the early 1970s, became the true origin point for what the world would come to know as Cabbage Patch Kids. This lot holds three vinyl doll heads from her officially licensed 1984 “The Original Doll-Baby” craft kits, produced by Fibre-Craft Materials Corp of Niles, Illinois — each designed for crafters to complete with a hand-sewn cloth body.
The set includes a brunette pigtailed head, a bald blue-eyed head, and a third head with golden-brown yarn hair still partly nestled in its original box, plus three matching instruction booklets illustrating the finished dolls. A wonderful piece of doll-making history for anyone who knows the real story behind the Cabbage Patch phenomenon.
