Long before it hung on a Phoenix wall in 1987, this little teepee began as a handful of colored sand — collected from the deserts and mountains of the American Southwest, then carefully layered and set into its pattern by artist E. Johnson. The design captures a Plains-style teepee in ochre, rust, and soft turquoise, its poles crossed at the top and a painted buffalo skull marking the hide.
The original backing card, still intact inside the frame, explains the tradition behind the piece: teepees built from long poles and buffalo hide, letting sunlight filter through the walls for warmth and light within. A previous owner noted where and when they acquired it — Phoenix, Arizona, January 1987 — a small but charming bit of provenance that travels with the piece.
