There’s real hand-work in this little wagon — the kind of toy that turns up in an old farmhouse attic, a bit sun-faded and battle-scarred from decades of play, but still carrying all the charm of the prairie schooners it was modeled after. A team of hand-painted wooden oxen pulls the cart, driven by a tiny carved figure perched at the front, while a hand-sewn fabric canopy arches over the wooden bed — the fabric worn to a soft, mottled patina that only comes with age.
Stamped “Japan” on the underside of the bed, this is a mid-century export piece, likely produced for the American market in the postwar decades when miniature Western-themed toys were popular souvenirs and gifts. The spoked wheels are hand-turned and painted red, and the whole piece has real presence for its size.
Honest wear befitting its age: one wheel is missing, and one of the oxen has a broken leg (see photos). Selling as a display piece or for parts/repair — a project for the right collector, not a flawless survivor.
