Vintage 1954 Music for Millions Series, Volume 10, American Square Dances with Calls, Polkas, Jigs and Reels, edited by Hugo Frey and published by J.J. Robbins & Sons, Inc., New York.
This substantial vintage music book was arranged for use across numerous instruments, including piano, harmonica, alto sax, accordion, trumpet, baritone sax, violin, clarinet, trombone, guitar, tenor sax and cello, making it an interesting surviving example of mid-century American recreational music publishing.
Includes traditional American dance and folk selections such as Turkey in the Straw, Arkansas Traveler, Irish Washerwoman and others, with musical arrangements intended for individual musicians and small orchestras.
Copyright 1954. Original price $1.50.
Condition: Good vintage condition overall with visible age and use wear. Cover has edge/corner wear, creasing, surface wear and a tear/loss along the right edge as photographed. Interior pages have fairly uniform age toning but remain quite readable. Please review photographs for condition.
Educational/collector note:
The Music for Millions series was designed to make playable arrangements accessible to amateur musicians. This volume captures the mid-century popularity of square dancing and traditional American folk music, so its audience isn’t merely sheet-music collectors. It crosses into square-dance history, folk music, Americana and mid-century culture.
