This appears to be a surviving Walker & Weeks office working/reference archive, rather than a later collector-assembled scrapbook.

The volume itself retains an old typed “OHIO BANKS” label on the exterior. Inside, numerous architectural images are accompanied by original Walker & Weeks identification cards bearing the firm’s name and Cleveland office address and recording information including job, location, view, photographer/reproducer, and file number.

The contents are organized around Walker & Weeks banking projects and include multiple views and stages of individual commissions, from architectural studies and renderings to plans, interiors and completed-building photography.

A number of the original office cards contain the striking historical annotation:

“Plate Lost in Fire.”

Several of these records are associated with Mugler Engraving Co. of Cleveland, a period engraving and photomechanical reproduction firm.

Research confirms Mugler’s involvement in the production of printing/reproduction plates during this era. The specific fire responsible for the losses recorded in the archive has not been conclusively identified, and no unsupported attribution of that fire is being made here.

The annotations nevertheless provide fascinating evidence of the history, reproduction and survival of Walker & Weeks’ architectural visual records.
