Fascinating and highly unusual vintage figural metal pendant or jewelry component depicting two workers positioned around a large dimensional bell.
The remarkably detailed scene shows the two figures performing different actions: one appears to hold a mallet in position to strike the bell, while the second figure handles another tool or part of the elaborate bell apparatus. The central bell is a separately constructed, functional moving bell with an interior clapper and actually rings.
The substantial cast-metal piece has wonderful dimensional detail throughout, including the workers’ clothing, tools, surrounding framework and curved lower structure. Multiple integral attachment loops suggest the piece was designed to be suspended or incorporated into a larger jewelry/decorative assembly.
This unusual piece was acquired with a collection of vintage jewelry. Exact maker, age, country of origin and intended symbolism/function have not been identified. No maker’s mark has been located. Metal content is untested.
